Knowing that I love handmade cloths and the craft work that all my older relatives do, my sister-in-law sent out a strange sort of baby shower invitation.
She took the different pieces for an entire baby layette set (blanket, hat, booties, sweater and pants), from a pattern book for crochet work. She sent all of the invites a copy of part of the instructions, enough yarn to do the item, and the required equipment. The most skilled crafters received the most complicated pieces, but even some of my non-crafty friends worked over-time on blanket panels.
At the shower, every gift was topped with a little knitted thing, and before the shower was over, I had an assembled purple and green layette for the new baby. The best part is knowing I can tell my new daughter that all her relatives helped make her beautiful little baby things.
